The 100: Game Over

Welcome to The Bookish Games, a variation of the game most commonly known as Mafia or Werewolf. If you want to know more about The Bookish Games, including How to Play, please check out the links in the menu.

A massive thank you to Asti for providing us with this amazing player graphic throughout the game! (Shannon: It is gloriously spot on, and gorgeous as always, Asti!)

  • Maria @mhisreading as Dante Wallace, Mount Weather, Goon, Godfather (Investigative Immune, Bulletproof), 1x Strongman, 1x Gun, 1x Neopolitan, 1x Doublevote
  • Harker @thehermitlibrarian as Clarke Griffin, The 100, Alarmist, 1x VIP, 1x Bookie

  • Beth @ArtemisHi as ALIE, Cult, Cult Leader, Insane (50% chance of recruitment being successful)
  • Anne @amengelhart as Octavia Blake, The 100 Cult, Even-Night Commuter Cultist

Congratulations to the Cult! I love this win because it really could’ve gone ALL WAYS. We half-expected Harker to vote together with Maria at the end of Day Eight, which would’ve eliminated Beth (and with her, Anne too), so it was really tense until the very last second! Eventually, though, the Cult took it home. Congratulations, Beth and Anne!

Shannon: Literally, it was anyone’s game until the last second! Because unbeknownst to anyone but Maria herself, Maria had a doublevote power! I was sure that some last minute shenanigans would ensue, but alas.

It wasn’t an easy win, but I think the biggest reason is the fact that Beth was such a believable Townie to the majority of our players. She was actively analysing and helping along the way, gaining trust whilst secretly recruiting you behind your backs. And boy, did she have bad luck with the recruiting! Not once, but twice did she try to recruit a player who was killed that very same Night. And then her Team wins with a majority of… two players. For all of these reasons, I’d like to grant Beth MVP status.

Shannon: Cosigned! Beth did such an amazing job of making you all believe that she was on your side- and she was, to rid you of Mount Weatherians, anyway! Her analysis was beyond impressive, frankly. And, she had no idea she was Insane- probably not until reading this actual post- which makes it more impressive that she kept on keeping on! Incidentally, the Wheel was on Beth’s side- she lost several recruits to death, as Inge said, but the wheel sided with her every time except her last attempt! (Also, it did help that Lincoln died protecting ALIE bwhaha.)

But there are many of you who deserve a shoutout! I mean, everyone deserves a shoutout, but these ones in particular:

  • Harker, for being the only person brave enough to enter in all our Night Events, and because I really appreciated the fact that Clarke Griffin was the last Townie standing. (And before Meeghan died, it was Clarke & Abby — mother and daughter!)
    Shannon: I won’t lie, I held out hope for Harker/Clarke til the bitter end. Even when the odds were really stacked against them, Harker never gave up. Very Clarke-like, indeed.
  • Greg, for absolutely pulling out all the stops to avoid being eliminated, despite being at the top of everyone’s suspect list for several Days. Your increasingly dramatic lies were so entertaining, as were your super narrow escapes! You were like a damn cat with nine lives.
    Shannon: Every game needs a Fake Fleimkepa, right? 😂
  • Anne, for signing up to the Spectators Chat because you wouldn’t have time to play, then being convinced to play after all as long as you had “the most Vanilla role possible”, then being recruited into the Cult and having to play the full eight weeks while constantly having to defend yourself against Cultist accusations. Our gratitude and respect is enormous. Also, sorry. 😂
    Shannon: Anne, I am less sorry, because this is a very Octavia thing to happen! But we do appreciate you playing- I was losing sleep deciding which player to cut, and you made it so I didn’t have to, so thank you!!
  • Kara, for giving us the most interesting Day One we’ve had in ages. We’re always scratching our heads at how to increase the tension on the first Day. Turns out, we just needed you to play!
    Shannon: I won’t pretend I didn’t love the heck out of Kara’s ruthlessness! I want to be Kara when I grow up.
  • Shannon: I also need to add Maria to the list, because she just gave it her all, even when she too had few chances left. And all her friends were dead, and Greg was secretly trying to kill her. Her own son, gosh. Frankly, I just love when players try so hard, it should be rewarded!

All the Night Chats have been imported to this website. You can find a list of them on the The 100 Game Page, as well as a link to the Spectators Chat and the spreadsheet.

Now it’s time to discuss our set-up! Or, as we like to call it, the List of Wasted Potential. Let’s discuss all the twists and tricks we came up with, whether they were used or not!

Spoilers for The 100 seasons 1-3 ahead.

Three Towns

Let’s start with an obvious one. There were three different Towns: The 100, The Ark, and the Grounders. Essentially, they all formed one team, but we gave them different names because we’re big meanies and we wanted to open up a can of confusion. I’d say we succeeded with that. 😉

Shannon: Also, the Grounders aren’t the bad guys, but of course The 100 and The Ark both thought they were at first! So it worked great all around!

But that’s not all the Town names were for…

Mount Weather kills

Mount Weather has a very… unique way of killing people. Because they cannot go outside due to radiation poisoning, they have to kidnap people, drain their bone marrow, and inject that marrow into themselves to become immune.

As such, the Mafia all started off as powerless Goons. Then, with every Night kill they made, they essentially drained that player and gained powers from them. Gruesome, I know, but it was one of my more clever ideas, if I may say so myself.

The rules were as such:

  • If the Mafia kill someone from Team The 100 for the first time, Cage gets the Usurper role;
  • if the Mafia kill someone from Team The Ark for the first time, Lorelei gets the Roleblocker role;
  • if the Mafia kill someone from Team Grounders for the first time, Dante gets the Godfather role. (Investigative-immune, 1x Bulletproof);
  • if the Mafia kill someone from the Cult for the first time, Dante gets 1x Strongman;
  • if the Mafia kill Murphy before he’s scavenged, one of the Mafia gains 1x Scavenger role. If they kill Murphy after he’s scavenged, they gain whatever role Murphy has scavenged.

After that first team kill, every time the Mafia killed someone else from one team, Shannon and I would spin…

Shannon’s Wheel of Mayhem!

Instead of using, Shannon put a lot of time and effort into making WHEELS! Much more colourful and dramatic, if you ask me. The most colourful and dramatic wheel of all was her Wheel of Mayhem, a list of one-shot roles the Mafia could gain by killing more than one player from one team (eg. The Ark). Most of these roles you will probably not be familiar with, so we’ve linked them up for you.

Fun, no?

The Cult

Of course, we had to have a Cult with ALIE at its head! Now, if you let a Cult run free, they can become unbeatable really fast, so we implemented some restrictions:

  • The first time ALIE tries to recruit a Mafia member, she gets a penalty. After that, she dies;
  • if ALIE dies, half of the recruited Cultists die and their ability to recruit is lost;
  • ALIE is Insane: ½ chance of successfully recruiting someone;
  • recruited Cultists lose their active powers but keep their passive powers (eg any communicative powers).

Night Events

We wanted to do something like the Big Red Button from BYOC2, and so we came up with Night Events, a series of dangerous situations you had to escape (beautifully written by Shannon, thank you!). In turn, we’d give out rewards or penalties to a random player.

Shannon: I had so much fun writing them! Actually, there was even an eighth Night event that I wrote with literally three minutes left at EOD7 because we realized there wasn’t one:

You stumble upon an oddly modern lighthouse on an island. And lo, the door opens, leading you to a very chic bachelor pad bunker. There’s all kinds of useless stuff, like motorcycles and liquor, and Warren Zevon is singing about werewolves on a sound system. Seems great, as you jam around, until… whoopsie, the door closes and locks behind you. Now what?

So your response to the Night Event didn’t actually matter, but they were so fun to read, and we hope you had fun coming up with creative answers for them! We liked your replies so much that we have cumulated them all into a single document for you all to enjoy.

Some of my favourite responses:

This one absolutely had us CACKLING because, during set-up, we often talked about what a crapsack Finn was. Glad y’all agree with us.

  • Night One held a reward: the Knife. A new weapon with its own set of consequences! If you used the Knife, there were three outcomes:
    • nothing happened;
    • DEATH happened;
    • the targeted player would be wounded, which meant:
      1. can’t vote the next Day;
      2. if target is Knifed before using their own Night action, they cannot use their Night action that same Night;
      3. if target is Knifed after using their Night action, they cannot use their Night action the next Night.

Siran received the Knife and used it on Amber G the next Night. We spun the wheel and it landed on “nothing” (whomp, whoooomp), and so Amber got away unscathed.

  • Night Two was a penalty that came from the Spectators’ Chat: the player had to vote for someone whose character was a natural enemy to the player’s character. In this case, Greg (Cage Wallace) had to vote for Harker (Clarke Griffin).
  • Night Three rewarded the winner (Greg) with a Bulletproof Vest.
  • Night Four also has the Spectators’ Chat to thank for being allowed to wreak havoc on Anna’s comments. (And thank you, Anna, for being such a good sport about it! We only wish you had commented more. 😂) (Shannon: I mean. Do we? How much more Trig could I have possibly translated!? 😱)
  • Night Five brought a Gun into play, giving the player (Maria) 1x Vigilante powers.
  • Night Six gave away 1x VIP to Harker.
  • Night Seven had us spinning Shannon’s Wheel of Mayhem, as we hadn’t been able to use it much. Harker received 1x Bookie. (Shannon: This is one of the WoM roles I really wanted to see in use, I was kind of bummed we didn’t see it in action!)

Romeo and Ju— I mean, Jasper and Maya

This was actually completely coincidental because role assignments are (mostly) random, but we connected the Ambers!

You all know Maya’s role by now: Amber B started off as a Traitor. Her task was to figure out who the Mafia was and secretly help them win. Until she died. The first time she died (when you voted her off on Day Five), her Saulus role was activated and she became Town. Upon her switch, another role was activated: the Martyr role. On any Night, she could choose to sacrifice herself, blocking all other Night kills. She nobly did this right away on Night Five, saving Harker in the process.

Shannon: This is one of my favorite roles ever. It wasn’t easy coming up with a way for Maya to be Mt Weather but…. not. Because she’s obviously not on their side!

What you didn’t know, because Jasper/Amber G died before Maya/Amber B, is that Jasper also had a secret role. If Maya died before Jasper did, he would become a Drunk, meaning every few posts would become gibberish and any Eavesdropping snippets would become more blippy. Shannon: Still a wee bit salty we never got to see Dead Jasper being absurd and drunk!

Clexa ftw

After Jasper and Maya, we decided to connect another set of lovers: Clarke (Harker) and Lexa (Shannon). And look at us literally pulling roles out of our asses for your entertainment here. We came up with the role of Spirit for Lexa.

If Lexa died, she would be able to send Clarke Nightly messages, limited to 102 characters. “Unfortunately” (I mean, fortunately for Shannon W but unfortunately for the role), Shannon didn’t die until the very end, meaning she was never able to use her powers. (Shannon: The 102 is actually a season 6 callback but… we’ll save that for the next round muhahha.)

Trust thy Neighbour

So how else could we use these three Towns? We thought it’d make perfect sense if Indra (Jeann) and Kane (Kerys) could communicate privately. A question you guys often asked was: Why make them Neighbours, why not Masons?

I believe Anne said it best on Day Three:

I mean, if you still need a reminder, we’d be happy to help in the future. 😏 Obviously we couldn’t say no to another option for more confusion.

Shannon: Truly, I kept saying out loud “but guys where would be the fun in that?!” every time someone asked why they wouldn’t be Masons. Because we could make them neighbors instead, of course! 😈 Also, deep down, I think I was hoping for a little Anne-and-me flashback from Chaos Walking bwhaha.

Deez Nuts

I apologise for that terrible joke, maybe we’ll do nut puns in a future edition? I promise they walnut disappoint. 😉 *insert groans from everyone*

Anyway, another role we didn’t get to use was Jeann/Indra’s Jobi Nut Vendor. Every Night, Jeann could hand out Jobi nuts to someone. Except, uh, they were kind of a wonky batch and anyone who received them would become kind of… weird the following Day. Which would be obvious from their comments.

Because both the Jobi Nut Vendor and Jasper’s Drunk role fell through, we were really happy when the Spectators voted for the mods to mess with Anna’s comments as a result of the Night Event. 😂

Shannon: The Jobi Nut Vendor came to me literally in the dead of night, and I raced to my laptop to tell Inge the idea- it was my pièce de résistance…. only it never was used! I sob forever.

Murphy’s Law

And last but not least, the role of John Murphy, which was kind of our favourite, we were hoping he’d go far. But you all know Murphy’s Law: anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Needless to say, we weren’t too pleased with you when you voted them out.

Alright, technically he was Third Party and had an anti-Town role, I’m just saying, y’all had bigger fish to fry, okay?

Shannon: I guess at least they didn’t try to hang him for a murder that a little girl committed? 🤷

We were seriously excited about this Scavenger role, which we planned like this:

He can inherit one power from a dead player. He does not inherit their alignment, but the role (eg doesn’t become Mafia but gains Roleblocker abilities). He can use both powers at Night. He does not gain all powers from all dead players, just one. He can only scavenge the roles revealed the previous Day (so if it is Night Four, he can scavenge a role from the people who died Night Three, as announced in the intro post, and the people who died Day Four).

It wasn’t until Maria suggested the following that we realised we’d made a huge mistake:

DOUBLE MURPHIES. WE SHOULD’VE MADE A BACK-UP MURPHY. Damn it, why didn’t we come up with this?! Shannon: Or, add Emori as Team Murphy! She could have been his “backup”. Don’t worry, we won’t make the same mistakes twice 😈

Anyway, since the role wasn’t used, we’re honestly curious: Dana, what role would you have Scavenged? In fact, I’d love to hear the answer from all of you! If you had the Scavenger role, what role would you have picked up?

Usually, we feature a huge list of our favourite moments of the Game here, but you’ve been waiting for this post long enough, so I thought I’d try something different! Shannon and I will both highlight one of our favourite moments here, and then we’d love for you to share your favourite moment(s) in the comments!

One of my favourite things was that, after Amber G’s revealed that she was an Eavesdropper (or “Eavesdropper Extraordinaire”, as she liked to call herself in the Night Action forms), the Mafia had the wonderful idea of trying to speak in code. That way, if Amber were to eavesdrop on them again, she’d be getting some really confusing feedback. We never got to share any of these with Amber because the Mafia eventually killed her off, but it was incredibly amusing.

Anyway, here’s a collage of Greg shouting random things.

Shannon: Gosh Inge, this is hard! I can make a small list, it’s hard to pick one!

  • Greg’s attempt at being Titus Fleimkepa. Its flaws had flaws, it’s true, but it was a great plan, and I think that without Beth’s vast knowledge of the show, he might have been able to sow enough confusion to live another day. Actually- this is another great example of why Beth deserves MVP. Had Greg lived that Night, the Mafia would have had two kills- Maria’s earned 1x Gun, and the Mafia’s regular kill- which very well could have sealed the game in their favor.
  • Lincoln dying for ALIE. Who could blame Kara for thinking Beth was Town? Not me! But just the fact that Lincoln would sacrifice himself for an insane AI was just… it made me chuckle.
  • Siran’s Lie Detector Question. Siran wanted to know if Kara’s statement “Town needs Grounders to winwas true. And…. it isn’t true, technically speaking. Grounders were *helpful*, yes. But were they necessary? Nope. I was really hoping that would throw a wrench into things, because chaos, but sadly Siran was just killed (twice, actually) before she could do much with it.
  • Amber B. being saved… and immediately sacrificing herself. We’d barely pushed “post” on the EOD comment when Amber’s “It’s Martyr time” popped up. I found it quite hilarious, and rather fitting for Maya, too!

You are hereby invited to join Harker and myself for the ILLUMINAE edition during the second half of 2021. Illuminae is one of my favourite books in the world, so I’m incredibly excited about this one! We’ll obviously use the first book, but it’s highly likely we’ll also use Gemina, because those characters are just too fabulous not to use.

More details to follow. For now, we all deserve a much needed rest.
Shannon: I’m in!

And that’s a wrap! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all so much for playing this fifteenth(!!!) edition with us. We still can’t wrap our heads around it, but we are incredibly grateful for your continued loyalty.

And also a massive thank you to Shannon for hosting this edition of The 100 with me! You have been such an unbelievable joy to work with. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and your passion with me, and for always being there to help with anything and everything. It’s been an honour. 💛

Shannon: Inge, it was so, so much fun! Thank you to both you and Asti for allowing me to do this- it’s been great, and a much needed The 100 fix after the end. And seriously, officially put me on the list for The 100 2.0! Coming… some time around 2028 probably haha.

Asti: Oh look, I’m here too! This is just a quick note to send love to not only all of our returning players – each game’s success depends just as much on you as it does on the set-up – but also to Shannon and Inge for coming up with an absolutely amazing and chaotic edition of The Bookish Games! The added twists and roles this edition were brilliant and it’s really a testament to their set-up that it was almost anyone’s game until the very end.

I wasn’t as active this edition as I originally planned to be, but it’s not from lack of love. Harker and Inge will likely be planning the next edition without me as my baby boy will have made an appearance by the time it launches, but if anyone ever needs me – even if it’s just as a friend – don’t hesitate to shoot me a message on Twitter. The worst thing about not being involved in the Games is definitely missing out on the friendships. 🖤

All our love,

Shannon & Inge & Asti

  • Meeghan @ Meeghan Reads as Abby Griffin, The Ark, Doctor
  • Shannon @tibbs10 as Lexa kom Trikru, Grounders Cult, Cultist, Spirit (in death, can message Clarke at Night)

Game Master’s Notes

… Are you all okay? I feel like we’ve been going on for so long, we need to start handing out towels and bottles of water.

So your quest to eliminate the Cult Leader resulted in, um, killing the Doctor instead. But you did kill Shannon, a Cultist, during the Night, so that’s something? Although apparently she has some freaky-deaky post-death role and you didn’t manage to completely get rid of her, whoops.

There are only four players left!! Passing out buckets of popcorn in the Spectators Chat as we speak. Good luck!

As always, don’t be afraid to contact us if you have any questions or just want to chat in private about what’s going on during the Game. We are here to help and want to make this as fun of an experience as possible! If it’s urgent, keep our time zones in mind: Inge lives on CEST (GMT/UTC+1) and Shannon on ET (GMT/UTC-5).

It is now Day Eight.

You have until Sunday 7pm GMT to discuss suspicions and cast your votes. Once the deadline has been reached, the person with the most votes will be eliminated.

Good luck!

The 100: Night Seven (Mafia)

It Is Night Seven.

Welcome Mafia! It is now your chance to openly discuss your evil plans. You may talk about what’s happened so far, brainstorm strategies to survive the next Day, laugh at how clueless the Townies are – whatever your heart desires.

You have two objectives by the end of the Night:

  1. Determine which player you would like to target for elimination.
  2. Determine which Mafia teammate you would like to send to complete the kill.

Once you have decided on these objectives, please have one of your team members submit your decisions to the Moderators by completing the Night Action form.

You only have 48 hours to make a decision. The Night phase ends each Tuesday 7pm GMT. A countdown has been added to the sidebar to assist you in determining how much time you have left each phase.

Remember: Your goal is to outlast and eliminate any other team. Use your kills wisely, and do your best to keep your team alive.

Mafia team: Maria, Greg, Kerrie, Nicole

The 100: Night Seven (Cult)

It is now Night Seven.

Once you determine which player you would like to recruit, please submit the Night Action form. Only you, the Cult Leader, can recruit members to the Cult. If you are eliminated, the Cult cannot recruit additional players but may attempt to win the game without you.

Each Night phase ends Tuesday 7 pm GMT. Your form must be submitted at this time in order for the recruitment to be completed and all discussion on these pages must come to an end.

Good luck!

Cultists: Beth, Jeann, Anne, Shannon

Game Master’s Notes

It’s Day Seven, and there are only six of you left! First of all, I’d like you all to pat yourselves on the back if you’ve made it this far. A very impressive feat, what with all the twists, challenges, and villains we’ve thrown at you.

Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Anna during Night Six. As you can see, she did not have magic voting powers, but if you’ve seen the show, you know you can’t put a gun in Bellamy Blake’s hands and not expect him to use it. 😉

And we’re still going, which means there are still threats for you to snuff out! With this few people left, is there anyone you can really trust?

As always, don’t be afraid to contact us if you have any questions or just want to chat in private about what’s going on during the Game.
