The Idea
Bookish Games… THE Bookish Games!? What if… what if I had my very own The Hunger Games on my blog? What if I made this into some sort of interactive event for bloggers?!
Now, hear me out. My idea is based off a game I played in a forum a long, long time ago. (I can’t remember what it’s even called, and Google is no help. ETA: Found the game thanks to comments. The game I played was a variation of Mafia aka Werewolf, which can be played in person or online. You can read about it here.) It may sound slightly confusing at first, but it’s really not.
I would need at least ten bloggers willing to sign up. Each blogger would be given a secret identity based off a character from The Hunger Games. Someone would be Katniss. Someone would be Cato. Someone would be Peeta. And so on. Each blogger would know his/her own secret identity, and no one else’s (unless it’s deemed appropriate for the role).
The object of the game would be for the players to figure out who is secretly Katniss, and eliminate her. Each week a post would go live on the blog with a basic prompt to get the discussion going, and then it’s free game from there. In the comment section of the post, players can point fingers, throw out random accusations, lie, mislead, be silent, whatever they want.
Before the end of the week, the players would have to vote for who they think Katniss is. Whoever gets majority vote is eliminated. If the players correctly guessed the identity of Katniss and voted her off, the game is over. If they get it wrong, they lose a member and game continues.
The player playing Katniss would also get a chance to have her own eliminations in secret. At set periods during the game he/she would be given the chance to kill someone off. Of course, that player would have to be careful because the other players would likely analyze that kill in hopes to determine who she is.
Believe me, it starts off incredibly goofy at first with everyone just randomly throwing names around, but as the kills start happening and people start analyzing each other’s moves, it gets intense. But, it all relies on participation.
This is where you come in. Is this event something you would be interested in? It would require stopping by the blog at least once a week, to add to the banter and throw out a vote. The more participation, the more chaos and entertainment.
The Sign-Ups
If you think you’d be interested in signing up, please comment below. If I get enough people that show interest in playing, I will send out an email confirming their place in the game along with the rules and their role. The Bookish Games would start on Saturday, July 27th, with updated posts and eliminations happening every Saturday after until Katniss is eliminated or the last one standing.
ETA: SIGN-UPS ARE CLOSED! If you are still interested, feel free to leave a comment or contact me through Twitter/email and I can add you to a waiting list in case someone ends up not participating or I decide to work in more players.
Emails will be sent out to participants on the 20th or 21st with further details. If all goes according to plan, first post will go live Saturday, July 27th!
May the odds be ever in your favor.

I’M IN, of course!
Hahaha, this sounds awesome! Count me in! 🙂
I played a game something like this, in real life! I forgot the name though, just that it had to do with werewolves killing off villagers and we had to find out who the werewolf is.
Anyway, I want to join!
This sounds amazing! Go for it! It is a really good idea. Is it always Katniss who wins the game? Do we have a chance to kill the other contestants? (eg. Cato, Glimmer, Clove, Foxface, etc) Sorry for all the questions, but like you said, it is a little slightly confusing at first for someone who never played this kind of game before.
Sounds fun, I’m in if there is room! May the odds be ever in MY favour!
This sounds really good fun and a clever idea, count me in.
Oh yes, ask questions! I definitely know it can be confusing!
No, not everyone has the same goal in the game. Some people will have individualized goals based off which character they get. For example, if you are Peeta, your goal would be to make sure Katniss survives, even if it means sacrificing yourself (which would mean that player is given Katniss’s identity). While the main goal would be find Katniss and eliminate her for a majority of the players, there will also be “secret” goals handed out as well.
Depending on when Katniss is eliminated, game may continue on. Usually in the games I played, once the main person was found out, the game would be over. But, I wouldn’t want Katniss eliminated in the second round and the game be over. It hasn’t been determined yet what will happen in that case, but I am coming up with a back-up plan.
Still, whose to say you’ll figure out who Katniss is? If you vote wrong and majority determines the wrong person is Katniss, that person is “killed off” and game continues. So yeah, Cato, Clove, etc. could be killed off just as easily as Katniss, especially with the secret goals being used.
Pretty much, in this game, you don’t trust anyone because you don’t know who they are and what goal they’re trying to pursue!
Great Debby! If we get enough participants (and it looks like we might) you can expect to see an email from me in the future 😀
Awesome Shannelle! The werewolf thing sounds familiar… I think we even had them in the forum one I played. Of course, I had to add my own twist for this 😉 If I get enough participants, I’ll email you!
Heck yeah! Hopefully we get enough willing participants – if so, I’ll email you!
OMG This sounds extremely fun! If you still need people I would absolutely love to be involved! Count me in. Hunger Games ❤ and now Bookish Games? My life is complete. :L
Laura @ Music Plus Books
I currently don’t have a maximum set, just looking for at least ten players so I’m sure they’ll be room for you! I’ll let you know once we get enough people 🙂
Great Emma! I’ll add you to the list and if we get enough participants I’ll shoot everyone an email 🙂
Oh, good thing I check my Spam folder. WP thought you were Spam! Silly thing. And yes, the more the merrier! I’ll add you to the sign-ups and email you sometime next week if we have enough people 🙂 Thanks Laura!
Oh, and wasn’t sure if you wanted to sign up or were just asking questions, so I haven’t added you to the list yet. Just let me know 🙂
This sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I’d definitely be in to participate!
~Andrea @ Beauty but a Funny Girl
Great! I’ll add you to the list and if things are good to go, should be sending out an email next weekend 🙂
I have never heard about a game like this but it does sound FUN! Count me in! Can’t wait to play! 🙂
Yay! So glad you’re up for it. Will add you to the list 😀
This sounds like fun! And it also sounds like I need to stop dragging my feet and read The Hunger Games already. *And* it looks like you won’t have a problem getting volunteers. Sign me up too! 😀 I’ll go pick up the books this weekend and read through them before the games start on the 27th.
(Totally going to stalk everyone that signed up so far for new blogs to read.)
This sounds so exciting! It’s a bit like murderer or something like that haha, I wish I could take part but school has been clawing away all my time D: can’t wait to see it pan out!
No worries! I understand. It looks like there’s enough people interested to give it a go! Can’t wait to get it started in a couple weeks 🙂 And good luck with school. I’ve had the summer off which is nice (well, except the whole working two jobs thing) but I’m sure when September comes around I’m going to be in the same situation! Eek ><
I’ve played the ‘in person’ version of this game! It’s so much fun, so definitely count me in, Asti!
You. Watch. Your. Back.
Just saying.
If you’re worried about the Bookish Games turning into a Bookish War, put us on the same team (if there are teams? Or is it every man for himself? I’m down with both : D).
Yay! I saw you retweeted me earlier today, so I was wondering if that meant you were going to join in. Playing online will hopefully be as much fun as it was for you in person. At least with it being all online, you can backtrack and see what every person said or did to help you point fingers! haha.
I would definitely be interested! This sounds like a lot of fun!
Is there still in place open? If so count me in 😉
The more the merrier! Though, I’m not sure if it’s safe to let both you and Eve play. I’ll have to keep my eye on you two 😉
I am so looking forward to reading these discussion posts and seeing everyone trying to guess at Katniss :). Brilliant idea!
Haha thanks Christina! I’m interested in seeing how it all turns out. I’m hoping for drama and chaos, but not in a bad way of course. And of course I’m sure some twists and turns might show up 😉 I’m just happy people are interested!
Pfft, I’m not competitive at all. But you know.. EVERYONE IS GOING DOWN, I’M WINNING THIS!
Totally not competitive.
Thank you! I think I can understand the game now. Yes! I would like to participate, if I can… I don’t know if you already have everyone you need to start the game!! 🙂
Nope! I don’t have a maximum number as to how many can participate. I mean, if we go off The Hunger Games there can be up to 24 people – 2 from each district! I’ll add you to the list and if you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask! 🙂
Yay! I was wondering if you’d be interested. Knowing the story won’t necessarily help in the game since everyone will just be causing trouble, but it wouldn’t hurt! (And c’mon, it’s The Hunger Games. How could you not have read that series? Though, if this goes really well, I’ve already thought about how we could do a different one for Harry Potter. Haha, I’m getting ahead of myself.)
And I actually think it might be a great way to get to know some new bloggers. I mean, I’m sure people will sort of take sides when names get thrown around, so it’ll pry be good to have people on your side so you don’t get voted out 😉
So glad you’re joining Leanne! I’ll add your name to the list and email you when next weekend with more info!
I’ve played a version of this IRL and I’ve also played a forum version, and I know JUST how fun it can be. Count me in!
This is a great idea Asti!! I would love to participate 🙂
This is so cool! =D
Count me in, please.
Great idea! Count me in 😀
Haha you’ll have to wait and find out. Because of the large turn-out, there will probably be a small team on Katniss’s side. But I’m not saying how many… You’ll just have to wait and see 😉
(And hey, maybe pairing you two up to start a war would be fun! Don’t tempt me! haha.)
Put you on the list Jenn! Hopefully the baby will allow you to play 😉
I didn’t realize there was an IRL version until people stated so on the comment, but after finally figuring out what the game is called (Mafia or Werewolf, depending on the variation) I can see it’s true! I’ve only played the forum game and it was an absolute blast. Hoping this is as well! Glad to see you’ll be joining us 🙂
Great Lauren! Added you to the list and should be shooting out an email next weekend 🙂
Yay! Love how many people have signed up! I’ve added you to the list and you should be receiving an email from me next weekend!
Yay! Welcome to the games Jessylyn! Will email you next weekend!
Wow, so many participants already! Woot! And yes, count me in if there’s still room. 😀
Whoaaaaaaaaa this is a fantastic idea! I’d love to be part of it too if there’s still space, heheh. >:3
Oh okay maybe I won’t have to speed through the books then. But I’m still going to go get them today! Asti you don’t even know, I’ve missed out on so many good books. There was a while were I wasn’t reading at all and then after that I refused to read anything but nonfiction. And I’ve just now let myself start reading YA and MG so I have tons to catch up on! That’s a good thing though, cause it means there are plenty of series I can read in their entirety and not have to wait a year for the latest installment. 😀 There will still be some of those, sure, but I will have bunches of good things to keep me occupied while I wait.
Sounds great! I’ve played a version of this IRL and it’s a lot of fun! Sign me up please?
I know! I’m very excited! You’re on the list 🙂
Going by The Hunger Games, I can do two tributes from each of the twelve districts, so I’m accepting up to twenty-four people which means there’s room for you 🙂
I didn’t even realize it was IRL game until someone mentioned it here yesterday. Crazy! Hopefully this one ends up being as much fun as the one you played IRL! I’ve added you to the list 🙂
Ohhh, I wish I could join! But, I’m on my way back from Italy on July 27th. Is is possible for me to enter and comment July 28th? 🙂 If so, I want to join the fun!
Oh yes! The post goes live on the 27th, but participants can stop by and comment anytime from then until the designated time frame (which I think is going to be five days). And of course, usually participants will want to come back and interact and maybe change their vote as names get thrown around and fingers are pointed. I’ll add you to the list, and next week when I send my emails out I’ll have a link to see the full rules and details to help clear up any confusion (and another week before the game starts, for anyone to ask questions)!
Oh, I completely understand! Two years ago I just went through this horrible time and when I came out of it, I kept thinking… What don’t I do anymore that I used to do that made me happy? And I realized it was reading. I had stopped reading! It was really slow for me to get back into it just because I had to learn to get lost in a book and turn my brain off, but just this last half year I’ve gotten back into it (and the blog helps, of course)! Now it’s just playing catch-up on all these great series like you! (And really, I don’t think it’s possible to ever really get caught up! Too many great books!)
Awesome! 😀
Ahhhh, nooooo! I missed the signups! That’s what I get for being lazy and doing other stuff instead of checking blogs out. D: This is such a fab idea, Asti, so please please please keep me on the waiting list while I secretly hope someone has to pull out. Kidding. 😉 Looking forward to the actual game, though too bad there won’t be blood.
Me and my gore. 😉
This sound so fun ^_^
Woot! =D
I am just now seeing this!! ERRRR… put me on the waiting list please. I would love to play along!
Angie
Angela’s Anxious Life
Haha no worries! I will def add you to the waiting list and see what I can do! I’ve been researching the game online (now that I finally figured out what it was from when I played it forever ago) and they often have replacements lined up just in case someone isn’t active in the game or breaks the rules. I’ll contact you if that happens!
I will put you on the waiting / replacement list. If someone does not participate or breaks the rules, I will substitute you in!
And if all goes well, I will have another event like this in the future. If so, those who didn’t participate this time will def get priority for the next one!
I’m hoping so! 😀
I still haven’t received an e-mail, is that possible? Or I might have deleted it accidentally, because I get a lot of emails sometimes.. In that case, I apologize – could you send it again? 😀
I did send one out to you when I did everyone else, so I’m assuming you might have accidentally deleted it. I’ll send another one out now. I just assumed I hadn’t heard back from you since you were on vacay!
